American Health Packaging Distribution Center

Shorter lead times and product quality was the answer for this distribution center project

When American Health Packaging (AHP) prepared to relaunch its contract packaging operation in Columbus, Ohio, the company could not afford for the HVAC system to slow the project down.

AHP is a leading producer of serialized, barcoded unit-dose pharmaceutical products. Its nearly 50,000-square-foot warehouse includes high-bay racking and ceilings heights reaching 35 feet; conditions that make conventional heating and cooling difficult.

In this case, AHP needed consistent temperature control for the pharmaceutical products, a quick delivery and installation to meet their contract packaging launch schedule, and a solution that would not require costly structural modifications to their existing building.
AHP selected Sauer Technical Services, a Columbus-based contractor, to lead the project. Sauer worked with Western Reserve Energy, the local Applied Air representative, to engineer a 30,000 CFM, 60-ton MATO-030 system with 972,000 BTUH natural gas output heating section suited to the building’s size and operating requirements.

The teams working together were able to provide an efficient engineered solution with the MATO product that allowed for significantly reduced lead-time over comparable equipment and equipment installation that was completed in less than two days.
The project team and Applied Air were able to meet AHP’s three key objectives: better temperature control, lower overall project cost, and a quicker system installation.

Provided tighter Temperature Control
MATO is designed specifically for large, open industrial spaces to continuously rotate and redistribute large volumes of air and maintain temperature control closest to product and people; this is where control matters most.
By reducing air stratification often associated with packaged rooftop units, MATO allowed for a more comfortable working environment for employees and pharmaceutical products are now secured in tighter temperature envelopes.

Avoided costly roof structural modifications.
Installing conventional rooftop units could have required structural analysis, roof reinforcement, multiple roof penetrations and a large duct distribution system. Each of those requirements would have added cost, construction coordination, and schedule risk. By selecting floor-mounted MATO equipment, AHP avoided the time and expense associated with reinforcing the roof and installing extensive overhead ductwork.

Faster delivery and installation
MATO gave AHP a faster, simpler and more efficient option to condition its facility. The stackable, modular design of the MATO air rotation system allowed Sauer’s team to install the unit in under 2 days. Preprogrammed factory digital controls also reduced initial start up time.
