Carter's Distribution Center

A retrofit to control temperature and humidity in the summer.

Carter's, a baby clothes packing and distribution company, needed to cool and dehumidify their 500,000 sq. ft. space for employee comfort and product stability. A ducted system was not feasible due to the planned addition of an extensive conveyor system and heavy 40-foot racking systems.
To ensure even temperature and humidity control from floor to ceiling, six air turnover units were installed along the building's perimeter. These units provide a total airflow of 348,000 CFM and are equipped with 600 tons of chilled water cooling coils. They are connected to two 300-ton air-cooled York chillers. The chilled water system was chosen for its diversity and lower overall operating costs compared to packaged DX systems.
Carter's recognized a $500,000 capital cost savings by using air turnover units instead of conventional packaged rooftop systems. Savings were achieved by eliminating ductwork and structural engineering fees. Additionally, the floor-mounted air turnover units eliminated the need for structural roof reinforcement and roof penetrations, reducing the potential for leaks and extending roof life. The contractor also reduced the electrical scope of the project and installed a DDC control system for remote monitoring, trending, and control.
