Storopack

Restoring productivity and product quality in a printing plant with air turnover.

Due to high humidity in the summer months, the printing machines at Storopack in Cincinnati, OH had to be slowed down. Production levels fell, and maintenance costs were very high in the summer months. In looking for a solution the building owner commissioned Applied Air to conduct a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis, which projected the temperatures in the space. Based upon that analysis, Applied Air recommended two IFA-400 air turnover units. Each unit supplied 45,000 cfm for an air turn rate of 5 air changes/hour. in order to help control the temperature and humidity in the space each air turnover unit had 80 ton cooling coils installed at the factory.
After installation the system was tested over a 30-day summer period using 10 data loggers.. It was established that there was less than a 2-degree difference in temperature anywhere in the space, exceeding both the design promise and the owner's expectations.
Due to the more efficient air distribution of air turnover the air turnover system was sized with 30% lower tonnage than the competing rooftop unit design required. As a result, the air turnover system achieved a documented savings of 67.5 KW per hour. Since the local electric utility offered rebates for energy savings, the building owner qualified for an $8,700.00 electric utility rebate.
The owner also learned that maintenance of the equipment and changing of the filters could be done without a ladder or roof access...allowing the business to minimize downtime.
